what is a cost effective but least painful/quickest way to get from Hanoi to Yangshuo? I would fly but when checking Google Flights for cost, it was too expensive for me to fly to either Nanning or Guilin (over $300CAD one way!). For overland, I prefer sleeper trains or buses for long haul travel.

≪by bus≫----you can fully enjoy scenery , especially China side ，and border crossing is easy without confusing so i reccommend "by day bus" more than by sleeper train from Ha Noi to Guilin(→Yangshuo).
①Ha Noi to Nanning---by day bus(there is no sleeper bus from Ha Noi to Nanning and passengers have to change another bus at the border after border crossing /about 8 hrs from Ha Noi to Nanning=4.5hrs at VN side+3.5hrs at CN side(highway)/ you can buy your bus ticket at a travel agency in Ha Noi/Dep.time:07:30am & 09:30am/
②Nanning to Yangshuo--by day bus/5～6 hrs so maybe you have to stay at Nanning one overnight if you go to Yangshuo via Nanning by bus only
