Does anyone know of the cheapest and most direct way to fly from Vietnam to Malaysian Borneo? We are in Ho Chi Minh and to fly to MB is going to cost in excess of $500 for two people. This is also flying via Kuala Lumpur. We've tried Vietnam Air, Pacific Airlines and Malaysian Airlines and the costs are all pretty similar.

Didn't know they fly to Vietnam?

Windygirl, I think you are stuck. We are flying to Borneo next week, and looked at all the options. Rates were pretty much the same, regardless of airline, we finally settled on taking Vietnam Airlines to KL, and then Malaysian Airlines.

No, not stuck. Easier if you're in Hanoi, but doable from HCMC. If in HCMC, fly either Tiger or JetStar to Singapore. From there you can take a bus across the border to Johor Bahru in Malaysia. Extremely cheap flights on AirAsia from JB to Borneo (Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Miri, etc.). Admittedly, it's not the most direct way, but it won't cost you too much, and it could easily be done all in one day (HCMC to Singapore is... 2 hours? Then to Borneo you're looking at 1-2 hours). I'd say that's the way to go.

My guess would be Air Asia. They had airfare from Hanoi to KL for $29 (advance booking) while I was there. There is a new low-cost Malaysian carrier that flies domestically called Firefly. Here is their link.

Thanks for all the replies. Went with kparsons' suggestion - the price was much more affordable and so we are now off to Borneo in a few days time to hang with the orang utans!
