Yup, there's a couple places across the street and to the left to eat. Just an FYI, you can fit 2 in a bunk if you are very very close, lol. Maybe your friend doesn't need to be alone if he or she is not odd man out!
I recommend vodka as its less trips down the hall after lights out....

I actually asked this question on this forum because we have slept in a very small 4-berth cabin in a ferry from Crete to Athens. We put two kids together and it was fine. But I was told these are really small and not very comfortable (and the kids have grown, again). So we thought we would buy 5 tickets and decide when we get there if the 5th can fit in the same cabin with the other 4, or if we prefer having the extra bed.

Extra bed is impossible because each cabin is quite small. I always stay in 4-berth cabins on the train to Sapa, not sure if there are 6-berth cabin, if yes, you can book the whole cabin.
Or you can book one two-berths cabin for the parents and one four-berths cabin for the kids.

I meant an extra bed in another cabin. Then, we can decide if we can all fit in our 4-berth cabin or use the extra bed in another cabin. We chose the regular (non private) train... We will see how we return when we're there. Might opt for the Sapa-Hanoi bus. ;)
