Hello,

Im planning on travelling from nanning to Hanoi in June, I have an evisa. I have just discovered that the train isn't an option because it passes through dong dang, not Huu nghi. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a bus from nanning to Hanoi that crosses at the huu nghi border?

Cheers

Isn't Dong Dang and Huu Nghi the same border crossing? There should only be one international crossing point there - it's the same one whether you arrive on foot or by train although there should be a dedicated channel for train travelers to use.

On the Chinese side, the border crossing is called "You Yi Guan" 友谊关 or Friendship pass and yes, buses from Nanning would go there. I'm not clear on whether there are through buses (like on Laos-China, Laos-Thailand and Laos-Vietnam routes) or whether a change of bus takes place at the border. Most likely it's the latter (as I've never seen Chinese plated buses operating inside Vietnamese borders) and if you book a ticket to Hanoi, you will probably be put on a different bus once on the Vietnamese side of the border once you show your ticket.

I thought as much - I was asking because I read about some tourists booking the overnight train from Nanning to Hanoi only to be kicked off the train at the border and made to get a taxi 3km to the correct border crossing (I suppose it's different from the train border crossing), anyway they miss their train and have to wait until the morning before transport to Hanoi.

Maybe it was on seat61, but I read somewhere that train riders crossing at that border can't use an e-visa. Could it be why those people ebdy mentions had to go to a different crossing? I would like to know, because I'm considering making a visa run from Hanoi to Huu Nghi / Dong Dang and prefer to use e-visa.

Hey there! What was the outcome? I’m planning on doing the trip from Nanning to Hanoi. However only have an evisa too. Flying is too expensive so planning on taking the train.
