My wife and I are planning to cycle from Sapa to Hanoi via what's known as the North West Loop through Tam Duong, Lai Chau, Dien Bein Phu, Son La to Hanoi. Does anyone know the state of the road especially Sapa to Tam Duong and Lai Chau? We believe it is now a good sealed road.

not good in the rainly seasons because wash out or mud slides.

Sorry to butt in on your post. I am plannning to cycle your route in 2 weeks time, when do you intend doing the same ? I would be happy to let you know how my trip went if its useful ?

That is quite good at this moment, except the Phadin Pass, it is under the construction. You should expect to take uphill ride most of the time, but beautiful scenery
