I was in Hanoi last Christmas, and the weather was really pleasant
Indeed. Despite everyone saying how cold it is in Hanoi in the winter, the reality is most days are above 20 degrees.

Wow! You are amazing! Thank you all!! I think I will focus on the North side this time :)
I really like Larsay's itinerary (3 days Hanoi - 2 days Halong - 3 days Sapa - 2 days Tam Coc) but I may change the days in Hanoi (as I will be there for landing and taking off) Weather is fine by me, NZ is pretty wild when it comes to weather and I am a winter person anyway :)
Now I have to start checking for transportation from place to place and accommodation. Do you think that - apart from Hanoi (I'm planning to buy a hotel there together when I buy the plane tkts), is it better to use Expedia/Trivago for hotels in smaller places? I think I should buy the Lonelyplanet guide right!??!? THANK YOU ALL!!!!
Checkout Travelfish no need to book hotels in advance but agree a good idea to book one for when you arrive in Hanoi
Book everything on the go but first and last night in Hanoi.
Have a list for places you like in Sapa...
Take the night train from Hanoi to Sapa.
Ha Long Bay Junks you book in Hanoi and includes transfers/shuttles, as its 4 hours each way.

It is possible to do a circular trip by bus from Sapa to Haiphong, and Haiphong or Cat ba to Ninh binh, or vice versa, without returning to Hanoi in between. Your hotel can sort out a ticket for the next leg of your journey.
No.
But it when you return from Ha Long in shuttle, get a taxi moto to bus station on south end of Hanoi and get a bus to Ninh Binh...many depart hourly...
