Leaving for Hanoi from Australia in 4 hours.... first overseas trip.....nervous, excited, angst, all of the above. A feeling i'll remember for the rest of my life. Committed myself to a 9 month trip, i may need to be committed! Any how, thinking of heading to Cat Ba to get myself in the groove. Any ideas of the best way to get there, is it worth spending a few days there? Ideas? -Cheers.

Go to Bai Tu Long bay and Quan Lan island. Find post #89 in FAQ Vietnam linked at my sig, less touristy than Cat Ba island.

Nothing much to do on Cat Ba. There is a national park I haven't been to, but there certainly isn't much going on in the town, and the beach is very small. Maybe follow HongHa's advice..
Definately still catch the halong bay tour on the boat , just get yourself to the harbour around 11am or noon and you can catch the day trip. (or over night if you want to sleep on the boat)

There is a good bar on the main street owned by a New Zealander and run by his Vietnamese wife - that will really get you in the groove. I would also recommend hiring a motor bike and going for a spin around the island.
