We have 2 days in late July to make our way from Phnom Penh to HCMC, but would really like to travel by boat and visit Chau Doc, etc. to get there. Is it enough time (maybe 1 night each in Chau Doc and Cantho) or should we consider taking the 6 hour bus from PP to HCMC and then jump on a quick tour to the Mekong Delta (and is there even a 2 day option)?

Thank you for your advice!

If you wait until you are actually in HCMC then;

The original Sinh Cafe
246-248 DeTham, Q1, Ho Chi Minh City.
Tel: (08) 8367338 - 8376833
Email : info@sinhcafevn.com

They offer a two day tour, we did their one day tour and we were very happy with them. We had a great day, really enjoyed it, very inexpensive and for an extra $1 they will pick you up directly from your hotel.

Have a look at their site, they have a number of options, including a two day tour.

Enjoy your trip :)

If you go from Phnom Penh then the agent that sells bus and boat ticket PP - SG I want to recommend is Capitol Guest House in Phnom Penh. Also see post #90 in FAQ Vietnam and read Fredsun's post about his boat trip SG - Chau Doc - PP.

Hi Everyone - thanks so much for all your advice. We've ruled out the road option. We'll probably go by river from PP-Cantho, using Cantho as a base for 2 nights, then onward to HCMC. It doesn't seem like there are a lot of scheduled tours for the same route (at reasonable prices!), so I guess we'll have to book each leg along the way.

Is there anything I need to be aware of for our trip being in JULY?

Thanks again!

In my opinion, Chau Doc or Vinh Long are better bases than Can Tho. Vinh Long, you can do homestays, arrange canal rides and (OK) floating markets -- even bike on islands. Can Tho is more about a couple floating markets. Anyway, that's my take on the Mekong Trio.

robert_reid: intriguing thought about Vinh Long as base. I'll look into that more (especially the biking part)!

Question: would it be unreasonable to take boats from PP all the way to Vinh Long in a single day without too much stress and/or arriving late at night? I read on the Cambodian tourism website that the Hang Chau Boat company offers $15 boat departing PP at 9am and arriving in Chau Doc at 2pm. Are there frequent boats from Chau Doc to Cantho or Vinh Long?

Another option we are considering which may simplify things given our limited time: Sinh Café in Chau Doc offers 2-day tour through Mekong to HCMC for $25 (includes 1 night in Chau Doc and 1 night in Cantho). Has anyone done this?? Is it good?

THANKS AGAIN ALL!
