I’ve just read in a ten-year-old travel book on Vietnam a strong suggestion against wearing shorts while in Vietnam. Is there any truth behind that suggestion as today?

I’ve been in all Vietnam’s neighbouring countries and it was not the case whatsoever.

Thanks, cheers!

Many tourists wear shots but at some place like Ho Chi Minh mausoleum you will be requested to wear long pants.

I was in Vietnam in May. You can definitely wear shorts and many tourists do....but keep in mind that very few locals do.

Only tourist wear shorts. Take a look around you, the locals in Asia, and Latin America put more effort into dressing than wearing clothes as if they are going to a picnic.

In the big cities, never, at the beach, no big deal.

You will need trousers for certain places on.

Best for the beach!!

In short: tourists can get away with wearing just about anything, but in VN culture (for VN people), generally wearing shorts outside the home or beach is considered crude. Wear them and don't worry about it, except for formal settings.

Respect the Vietnamese culture and do not wear shorts, except at the beach !
