We're looking for a little advice on travelling from HCMC up to Hanoi for 10-12 days from mid-September. We've been reading and researching a little and so far I have come up with some places to visit:

Fly in to HCMC - see the Cu Chi tunnels, maybe Mekong Delta if time allows (3 Days)
Travel up to Hoi An to enjoy the beaches and relax a bit (3 Days)
Then up to Hanoi for Halong Bay experience (3 Days)
We fly out of Hanoi to Bali, date TBC, but we wish to allow 10-12 days for our Vietnam trip.

Appreciate our timeline is tight so have removed what I think are some 'nice-to-sees' of Hue, Sapa and Mui Ne… Unless anyone thinks these are must sees!?

Also, would be interested in a little advice on best way to travel between destinations.

Thank you!

With short time you should use flight to connect each place. Maybe 2 nights HCMC then one night Mekong Delta, overnight in Can Tho then next day take flight to Danang - Hoian, 2 nights in Hoian - 2 nights in Hue. From Hue you can take flight to Hanoi, stay two nights - the rest in Halong Bay.

In response to #1

Sandy - thank you. Really useful and sounds like a good plan of action.

I like the itinerary Sandy has proposed. And I think Hue should be on your must see list. It's so close to Hoi An, so the transit to get there and then back to Danang for a flight out of the area is negligible.

Certainly the Mekong Delta, if not, why bother going to the South ?
Too short for a thorogh visit of all Vietnam. I recommend

Day 1 and 2 : Saigon
Day 3 : Cao day temple Thai Ninh + Cu Chi Tunnels
Day 4 and 5 : Delta (Ben Tre-Can Tho) + flight Saigon-Danang + taxi Danang-Hoi An
Day 6 and 7 : Hoi An
Day 8 : Flight Danang-Hanoi + visit Hanoi
Day 8 and 9 : Halong Bay
Day 10 and 11 : Sapa
Day 12 : Return

NO Hue because it takes 2 days to visit OR you fly Saigon-Hue instead of Saigon-Danang.

Mekong Delta is the best choice for homestay at local people and join floating market in the early morning (6AM. In floating market, you can learn more about local life and culture as well. Further, you can enjoy a lot of special fruits in there which perhaps they still have in Vietnam only

To move between Hanoi, HCMC and Hoian, you should take flights (Vietjet or Vietnam Airline. Vietjet is cheaper than Vietnam Airline) because you don't have much time. When moving to Hoian, it is ok to have 1 day in Hue. 10-12 days may be a bit rushed for your itinerary.

Just mention about the rainy season around that time of the year in central Vietnam.
