| hanuman00:19 UTC07 Aug 2007 | There are a number of bus companies that make the overnight run up to Taungyi and you'll get dropped off any where's between 2AM and 7AM [yes, I've been dropped at 2AM, 4AM and 4:30 and 5AM]. Make sure when you get on the bus that the bus driver or attendents know that you want off at Kalaw [which is the first town that you'll hit after climbing up the winding mountain road], since it will be very dark when you arrive. The bus normally drops passengers off right in front of the Winner Hotel and they'll charge a full rate so I'd recommend walking down the same small road to the Parami Hotel on the next corner, ring their doorbell [it's right next to the gate] and someone will wake up to let you in. If it's around 4AM, they'll give you that room for free for that night IF you stay subsequent nights.
PS--very good restaurant right across the street from the Parami called Tha-Zins. Small little family run restaurant with good and fresh Shan food.

The long ride from Yangon can be anywheres between 9-15 hours and that's if there isn't any bus breakdown.
Tip--try to get one of the more reputable companies that run up to Taungyi and book not only the bus but a seat towards the middle and if you're tall, sign up for an aisle seat. You don't want to end up at the back either. Have a flashlight/torch handy, some snacks and liquids, and a warm fleece because the temperature drops at night once you start climbing up into the Shan plateau.

| man_in_seat_6118:40 UTC07 Aug 2007 | The train ride from Thazi (the junction on the main Rangoon-Mandalay line) is wonderful, a real treat, into the hills, up a mountainside on a switchback, looping around on itself to gain or lose height, stopping at small villages.
I'd give serious thought to taking an express from Rangoon to Thazi then the 'Slow Train from Thazi', it's not just transportation but an experience in itself. www.seat61.com/Burma.htm</a> has train times and a few photos from my own trip, taken en route from Inle lake via thazi back to Bago. It's a trip I'd love to repeat!
