I have a motorola v360 that I would like to take with me this summer to Vietnam. I will need a phone as I am a teacher accompanying a group of teenagers on a trekkiing/volunteer trip.
Not exactly a direct answer to your question but I wouldn’t bother to bring my cell phone to Vietnam. Instead, every time I went to Vietnam, I bought a USED CELL PHONE. They are so cheap and plentiful, for about 500,000 VND ( $30 USD ) I got a good Nokia with all features include Simm Card. I sold it back to the same place that I bought it from for half price when I left. | 1
Just go with your original plan. Bring your own, unlocked phone and buy a SIM card. They are sold everywhere, including the Post Office. I think the minimum amount is 75,000 VND. Your locals calls won't be that much, but the international ones might be pricey - check the rates. | 2
First, getting your phone unlocked is not "illegal"! As you know there are shops in Ireland that will do it for a small fee. You can also get the same "unlocking" service in Thailand or Vietnam for an even smaller fee. If you're flying into BKK, just go to the MBK shopping center and on the 4th floor there are LOTS of phone shops to help you. You can buy a Thailand sim card for around 200 baht. Once you're in Vietnam go to any phone shop, they are ALL over, any taxi or cyclo driver can take you to the nearest one. Sim cards in Vietnam are priced by how lucky the numbers are (around 90,000 vnd), a number with lots of "8s" will cost more. Have the phone shop sales person set your phone for english prompts and show you how to send international texts. | 3
