Trekking in Vietnam or Laos?

I'm planning a trip to Laos and Veitnam and would like to do a small trek , maybe 2-3 days, but can't decide whether to do one whilst based in Luang Prabang or Hanoi. Ideally I don't want to travel more than 5/6 hours (by road) from the city to the start of the trek.

I would be interested to hear what people who have done treks in either region thought the pros and cons were or any recommendations

The major trekking regions in northern Laos are Luangnamtha and Phongslai. You certainly can't reach either of those in 5/6 hours time. There are shorter treks you can do from Muang Noi. You can get there in about 6 hours time from Luang prabang, using bus/ boat combo.

But really based on your criteria it sounds like you want to go to Sa Pa from Hanoi.

Sa pa also looks amazing but was a bit put off by the fact it seems to be overrun with tourists
