Going to SE Asia 2 weeks in August 2018. We have friends in PP we'd like to spend a few days with. We also want to have a week slobbing in a hotel with decent pools, enough interest in the area to keep the kids amused and preferably a beach.

We don't want to spend a day each way travelling to PP. We also want to travel for a reasonable price. Airasia prices are fine - Singapore prices less so!

We've been to Phuket and Bangkok and don't fancy either of those again.

We thought about Kep, but we don't think there's enough around to do on the days we don't laze by the pool. So started looking into different places in Thailand, but travelling to/from PP looks like it'll take a day from everywhere except Bangkok!

Any ideas on where I could look into?

Thanks

Besides from Bangkok, there also cheap fast direct flights to PP from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and from Ho Chi Mihn City in Vietnam.

For example, you could fly into PP changing planes in Bangkok or KL or HCMC, and visit your freinds. Then you could fly from PP to Pho Quoc in far south Vietnam, changing planes in HCMC. Or from PP, you could fly cheaply to
Sihanoukville in Cambodia, which has numerous beaches plus hotel options with pools. I mean, really w/ 2 weeks you could in one day cross overland from Sihanoukville into Vietnam, and take a ferry to Pho Quoc, and at the end fly out from there.

I'd head for Vietnam, before after meeting friends. An overnight train ride will give you a choice of beaches..

Thanks for both those replies.

Sorry, should have made it clear Vietnam is a definite no for our slobbing pool/beach week. We've toured quite a lot of that country and fancy seeing & enjoying more of Thailand.

Think about Koh Samui, nice beaches, hotels with lovely pools & plenty to do if you want! There is a great night market at Bophut (fisherman’s village walking street)on Friday nights with great food & cocktail carts as well as restaurants. A lot nicer & quieter that Phuket. Beaches in Vietnam aren’t as nice, pho quoc is nice but very quiet a lot of the bigger hotels are a taxi ride from town we stayed at Mercure resort which was lovely!

Given your criteria, I don't think it will be possible to avoid a trip that takes most of the day except if you remain in Cambodia, i.e. Siem Reap or Sihanoukville or choose Kuala Lumpur.

Given that it is the rainy season in most of mainland S E Asia, Koh Samui/Phanghan/Tao should have the best beach weather, if Vietnam is off limits. If you want to keep it cheap, then get a return to KL, fly into Sihanoukville for beach, and out of PP, and take a chance on the weather on the Cambodian coast.
