Which route would be better? Budget wise.
Start from home to HCM city (flight)> Hanoi (road)> bangkok (flight)> HCM city (flight )>home

Or
Hanoi (flight)> HCM (road)> bangkok (flight)> Hanoi (flight )>home

I can book. A multi city flight but im not sure the price will be easy as a round trip. I plan to go from saigon as i tour my way up to hanoi and spend the next 2 to 3 weeks in thailand. Is it worth it to go by flight from thailand to vietnam or should it be by vehicle?

It's an impossible question, and how long do you have for your trip? You mentioned 2-3 weeks in Thailand, but how long do you have for the whole trip?

Another impossible question.
Just to use the first proposed route for example: Hanoi to Bangkok by land:
It would involve a lot of really long bus trips, on crowded transport vehicles, crossing crazily scenic mountain areas on sometimes bad roads, finally going by better roads to Luang Prabang in Laos. And you'd want a couple of days to see Laung Prabang, cause everyone loves that. Then from Luang Prabang on a 2 day scenic boat trip to the Thai border. It means minimum one week, just to get to the Thai border.

I would love it, but would want 2 weeks to do it. What do you think?

If you booked a multi city flight into Saigon and out of Bangkok you could avoid the need for a multiple entry visa to Vietnam. If you didn't want to go overland through Laos, then just book a flight from Hanoi to Bangkok or Chiang mai. You could also look at getting a return to Bangkok, and then a cheap flight to Saigon, which might be a cheaper option.

for one month, roughly 2 weeks in Vietnam and roughly 3 weeks in Thailand.
thanks for the suggestion. I have already through most of Vietnam so I want to explore Thailand this time, just as beginner experience because I have never been to Thailand.

I think will try this, going on land seem too time consuming for only one month of two country. It'll be my first time, so I will take the first trip as a touring experience.

Personally, you should travel from Hanoi -HCMC-Thailand.
