preah vihear tempel

Country forums / South-East Asia Mainland / Cambodia

Hi

We are heading to Cambodia in a few weeks. We would like to visit the preah vihear tempel. Does anybody know how the situation there is? Is it too dangerous to travel to this area? I read several reports, that tell people not to travel to this area.
We would travel from Siem Reap, but have not decided how yet. Are there local buses goingt there or would it better to go with a driver?
Your reply is much appreciated. Thanks.

Just check forum for the past year or so. All fine and safe. Good roads, little traffic. Buses, Vans, Camrys available in SR from morning to around 1 PM. Accommodation nice and adequate, even for people who like it a bit fancier. Food plenty and good.
A small new museum close to Sra Em on the road to the temple. You can now also walk up the mountain over a long wooden stairway that was built next or over the ancient and partly uses the original stairways. Nice quiet forest and walk in the shade.
Temple costs 5 USD entrance fee and if you prefer to be driven up it is another USD 5.

No need to have a GH arrange the trip for you. If you're in a rush, get a taxi and leave very early in the morning. Temple box office opens at 8 but if you walk the stairway you can start earlier and pay on the top or on return.

No crossing whatsoever to the Thai side and the few very nice items on that section of the temple area there.

The relatively poor area will appreciate your business and the very friendly people will receive you with honest smiles.
