My wife and I will be in Laos after the new year. Are reservatiosn for lodging suggested/necessary during this time period. We know it's high season.

Where in Laos?

Laung Prabang fills up between Dec 22 and Jan 5th.

It also depends on the hotel/guesthouse. If you want a particularly popular place like "The Boat Landing Guest House" in Luang Nam Tha, you should book ahead. Late January, Luang Prabang wasn't totally full. But again, if you want certain places, book ahead. We were glad we booked ahead for The Xieng Muang Guesthouse because they were full the entire week we were there... as was Sayo, next door. We spent all of January in North Laos this year and the whole month seemed high season to me. We had trouble getting flights then too.
