Back in the eighties my wife had a seizure on the streets of New York. Scary enough in itself.
She spent 4 days in St Vincents hospital
On our return to Australia we received a bill for over $5000
For a cost of about $80 we were covered.
To quote that infamous card "don't leave home without it "
Cheers

As regards insurance for serious injury/medivac:
Ask yourself if you have enough savings to pay for medivac if you need it.
If the answer is no, just have a little think about who may be left with the tab if you're lying seriously injured in Ratanakiri! Parents, siblings, kids, friends? Do you expect them to refuse to somehow raise the money to save your life?
You're dumping YOUR responsibility on them. Who's going to be the kind one prepared to remortgage their house due to your selfishness?
OP, good decision. Hopefully never need to claim though ;-)

Depends have active you are, and what risk you take, and do have medical conditions.
In my 5 trips to SE Asia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar, yes, but, I rent a motorcycle, which is dangerous and cause great injury should a accident occur. I also trek, climb waterfalls, and fish streams, and hike remote areas, where i could break a bone or take a bad fall. I also go Scuba Diving, and thats High Risk as well...
I use WorldMed, a AIG company, with $500K medical Insurance, and Evacuation Insurance, with HIGH RISK, for the Moto and Diving, it covere me as a driver, not a passenger, and you need a International Drivers Permit to qualify for this as well.
Bangkok is your nearest refuge for top notch medical care, after that, you need to get to the States/EU.

Depends on where you are and what you are doing. I live in Korea and am covered by the public system here. So I don't have travel insurance. But when I go to countries where the medical facilities aren't places I won't to place my life in the hands of, then I'll grab some travelers' insurance.

So when you do get travel insurance do you get it per trip or do you just have yearly coverage? We try to take 2 or 3 trips a year so do we get insurance for each trip or are there places that just cover you with an annual fee or something?

I'll be going over to Cambodia from Saigon overland so there's a bit of on the road there. Also, will be making trips to the Mekong delta as well as Ba Ria-Vung Tau from the base in Saigon. Will also head up north to Hanoi, Hai Phong, Yen Tu mountains and possibly Ha Long (maybe won't have enough time).
Thanks again, everybody. I will be on the plane in 4 hours' time.
