in Hanoi. The various agencies offer trips from $19 - $25 (one way) p/pax.
When we actually arrived at the departure place the next morning we found out that they sell
the tickets for only 250.000 VND.

They organise trips to Nanning / Beihai / Guangzhou.
The bordercrossing was easy. The will give you a badge before leaving the bus on the Vietnam site and
they pick you out of the crowd on the China side.
You can also take the bus from Nanning on the corner of the street next to Chaoyang Lu (across Bank of China) behind the big pharmacie on the corner.
