For all it's worth: I happen to be the GM of a hotel and my preferred guests are the ones that do NOT ask for discounts as i can then flog the room at rack rate. I always, always, always ask when booking, the effort is close to 0 and the worst than can happen is getting a "No way" for an answer.

And for all it's worth, I own a guesthouse and people can ask and maybe we'll give one and maybe we won't and for a variety of reasons that customers don't always understand. And occasionally we get the "well, if you don't give me an A/C room for $10, I will go down the street to a place that will." Our answer is always, "would you like us to help carry your bags?" Can't speak for every establishment, but the threat to take your business elsewhere never works with us, and a few other places I know take the same stance.

So hanno, for us outsiders just what the heck is a "rack rat"? You stretch the customer on the rack until he pays up?
