Backpacker beachess in Myanmar or should I go to Thailand?

Hi folks,

My wife and I are heading to Myanmar for a 3 week trip in March. Plan to spend about 2 of the weeks in the interior and then would like a week on the beach. From what I can tell, the beach scene in Myanmar seems to be resort based and expensive. We are looking for a nice beach, chilled out, inexpensive, beach hut (or something along those lines), where we can meet other backpackers. Any tips in where I can find this or accommodation recommendations? Or do you think its better to head back to Thailand for the final week on the beach? Been two Thailand a few times and I know there are great beaches that you can stay at for cheap!

Agreed, obviously Thailand. Myanmar is just really undeveloped.
What beaches would you recommend in Thailand?
I've only been to Chaweng on Koh Samui, Krabi and Patong on Phuket and didn't really like those.

Thailand, although I was pleasantly surprised how pleasing Ngapali was in late November

Thong Nai Pan beach on Koh Phangan could rival the best beaches in Hawaii where I (fortunately) call home.

Thanks Kamaaina!!! Exactly what I am looking for, although more expensive than a typical beach hut in Thailand. Do you have any information on this place (eg. how do you get there?) Their website is not in English.

Fly to Thwande is best bet although not exactly backpacker way. Can go by bus but its a long rough road unless its improved recently.

I took a pickup truck/bus over bumpy road from Koh Phangan's main pier to get to Thong Nai Pan beach. Apparently you can also take a boat there.

The beaches in Myanmar are wonderful if you come from a country that does not have beaches. If you come from South Africa, Hawaii or Australia, they are very ho hum.
Ngapali is very nice, but like most beaches, it has relatively expensive hotels, that rather ambitiously call themselves resorts. They are hotels with beachfronts . Nearby are some nice restaurants, sadly geared to the western palate, so hard to find Rakhine food.

Just ate 11 meals at various restaurants this month and ALL offered traditional Rakhine food as well as Asian dishes-that is if you like it hot.
