We are going to Burma next week. We are flying in from Bangkok and will have minimal luggage we need for our time there.
Due to the current embargos I am sure there are items easily obtained by us in Thailand that would be appreciated by locals in Burma.
I was wondering if there are any pharamceuticals eg: antibiotics (easily bought in Thailand) that may be appreciated by a doctor or hospital. If you know anyone we might give these to feel free to message.
Also is carrying a quantity of drugs (non recreational) likely to cause problems on arrival in Yangon?
Also considering taking some books (adult and/or childrens). Any suggestions of titles that people you have met have expessed interest in that I could obtain in Bangkok? Nothing that would bring me into conflict with the ruling powers (I am no hero just another fat, western tourist).
Any other suggestions from those of you who have been to Burma and have enough contact with locals to know what may be of interest or use.
Will have a day or two available in Bangkok to seek out any items we are taking (recommend a good bookshop there if you know one).
Thanks for any suggestions you can offer. I would also appreciate if we did not stray into the "don't go" debate. We have not made the decision to go lightly, will try to ensure as little of our money gets into the wrong hands as possible and simply do not believe the embargos have the desired effect but rather impact on the innocent.

There is a recent thread on this branch asking the same questions with lots of great answers...I will search for it and bump it up to top for your reference.

Most pharmaceuticals that are available in Thailand will also be stocked by hospitals in the main towns/cities of Burma, unless you are taking a truckload your bagfull will make a negligible impact on a country of +50 Million people. We met a Doctor from medecin sans frontiers who was working in a remote part of the north, He said lack of pharmaceuticals was not the problem but the difficulty of getting permission from the govt.(even for them!)to visit regions in need .
