For those who might be interested, here's my experience of getting a visa direct from the Embassey in Bangkok (hope you see this jjballen!). Mine was issued in 3 working days without any problems (I'm British), and I also know that a French couple got theirs just as easily at the same time. I've no idea if they have any no-no's which mean they wont give a particular person a visa, the only query they made with my application was when I originally said that I was unemployed they asked me to write what my job had been. A very easy and smooth process, but from my experience you will have to apply in person as the tour agents around Khao San road etc all seem to have stopped offering a Myanmar visa service.
Anyway I fly into Yangon Friday so looking foreward to it!

Hello Peeps,
I just got to Bangkok today. I asked around a few agencies and they all quoted me 1800Bahts for a visa to Myanmar, hand in my passport today and get it back Friday.
So I took a taksi from next to Kho San Road to the Myanmar embassy - 85Baht! Driver pretended he did not have change, so I gave him 100Baht - it's all good.
In the embassy, you fill out two forms, you need two passport sized photos and a photo copy of your passport. They can take a photocopy there for 10Baht.
The fee for the visa was 810Baht. To get back to Kho San Road area, I took a riverboat back for 13Baht...
If you son't have time or are lazy, then apply via the agencies. I found two that would apply for a visa, and two that said they no longer applied for Myanmar visas...
