Hi
I have heard that you can get a visa for Myanmar in the city of Kunming.
Has anyone recently done this with all the protests going on in Myanmar?
Are they still offering visas and can you still get across the land border from China?
Thanks for your help.

Hi there,
We just passed through Kunming last week and were planning to obtain our visa there but when we heard the news about the latest violence, we decided to pass. It's my experience over the last 6 weeks there that they'll probably let you do anything in China if they can make money off you doing it. Meaning, if you wanna book a bus overland from Kunming to Myanmar, they're probably still offering them.
We're back in Bangkok now and are planning to do more research at the Myanmar Embassy down the street from our hotel. From what I heard from a German friend who lives and works here, she doubts they are even issuing visas to Westerners at this time as we would be in a very dangerous situation. As she put it, we'd be among the first targets they'd hit to make a point to the rest of the world that they mean business (as if killing monks and journalists isn't enough), and we'd also be cut off from much help if something were to happen.
The reports here in Thailand are that the situation is "back to normal" but no one believes that. The news and the prevailing attitude of those we've talked to says the silence is a bad omen of worse things to come.
As much as I'd like to see this country, I fear it's best done at another time. Best of luck and be safe!

Just applied for a Myanmar visa today (10/15) in Kunming; you'll be asked about your occupation, presumably to weed out any journalists. But, yes, tourist visas are still being issued, and you can get them same-day, next day, or within two days. Bring three pictures!
FYI, the Myanmar consulate is no longer in the Camellia Hotel. It's now at 166 Weiyuan Lu, Suite A504, in the back of the Longyuan Jewelry Center building. It's roughly behind the Carrefour that's off Dongfeng Lu.
