Hi guys!

I just realized that we'll be in Myanmar on Union day, and I was just wondering if things close down or if they run as usual? We'll probably go to Inle Lake on this day. Will the public transport run as normal?

Hi. Union day- 12th Feb is one of the numerous public holidays in Myanmar. It shouldn't affect you much as a tourist. I've been in the country 3 or 4 times for ^Armed forces day^, which is another public holiday in March. All internal flights will be going as usual and bus journeys should be OK, Thou you might find there is a few less than on a normal day. You might find that a few shops and restaurants could be closed but not enough to cause a problem. If you are in Yangon, you will find that the big indoor market will be closed (it closes on all public holidays). The only Holiday that really affects tourists is Thingyan which is in April. So, the direct answer to your question is- no, you won't have any problems. Good luck

Thank you. Sounds good. Who knows, maybe there will be some interesting events on this day.

Yes, you could be right. People from the various Ethnic groups traditionally get together on Union Day. So you could well come across random Street parties and festivals wherever you happen to be on that date. Events like that usually make good photo opportunities and foreigners are usually made welcome to join in.
