sorry, somehow, I missed this topic and just posted a similar question as I'm in much the same situation.
I'm including the details and my 'practical questions' here again hoping for any updates and wise advice
lexy

I'm due in Myanmar for 4 weeks on 26 October. I have my visa, I have my flights (arranged a few months ago). I'll be travelling independently aiming at ensuring most of the money I spent goes directly to the local people.
Given the present violent crackdown and measures taken by the government there, I'm not sure now if I should cancel this trip or just go. I'm an experienced traveller (50+ countries), have been to places that were temporarily "unsettled" and got by OK staying away from trouble spots or demonstrations, I'm not a fearful person, but I'm really starting to wonder whether it is safe to go at this stage.
Apart from the safety aspect, I also wonder whether
1/ I could actually travel around the country (ie roadblocks? suspended bus/train services? etc Is it worth going at this stage"
2/ whether it is safe in the current situation for local hostel/guesthouse operators who provide accommodation for independent travellers, to have foreign guests staying during this time. Does this presently put locals at risk (where it wouldn't have done so a few months back).
A part from that, I'm experiencing trouble getting travel insurance; I can take out insurance (that's not the issue), but the policy would not be valid any longer should the (Australian) government up their travel warning to "do not travel" (at this stage it's 'reconsider your need to travel') after we take out the insurance.
Any advice, local knowledge, updates from people that now Burma well would be most welcome.
Thanks heaps from Lexy.
