We'll be in Burma for a couple of weeks from new years eve, sorry if this has been asked here a million times, but does anyone know of a nice hotel that isn't directly linked to the government?
THANKS!!

In Yangoon a little out of downtown is the WONDERFUL Motherland Inn II. It is about $15 a night for AC I believe. The people that work at this hotel are some of the NICEST people in the WORLD. They will do ANYTHING they can for you. For example, the day we arrived they had us go get breakfast at around 10:00 and they did NOT charge us. Additionally breakfast is supposed to be 7-11. However, we had to leave by 5:30 am and the INSISTED we have breakfast before we leave.
Mandalay - I absolutely loved the Royal City. Amazing large clean rooms (double aspect), roof terrace, great location and lovely staff. About $20 for a double.
Yangon ... copied from my trip report ..."Found an absolute gem of a hotel which a friend had stayed in .. Chinese, only 2 years old, on 5th and 6th floors, pristine clean ($14 for a huge room with 2 windows, TV, settee, bathroom & mini fridge) and just 2 minutes from Sule Paya, Traders etc. (Chan Myae guest house, 256/275 Maha Bandola Garden street .. which is next big street east of Sule Paya Road and in C1 on your maps.) Great Bamar breakfast too. Also have rooms with balconies."
This was smack in the middle of the downtown area but just where I wanted to be. I'm not very good in cities and I decided the best way to handle it was to locate myself right in the middle of everything. It wasn't noisy and I loved it. Sorry but I don't agree with Muzzman ....I spent one night at the Motherland and for me it was too far out. I actually thought it was a big money making concern and can't understand the fascination with it.

All hotels and guesthouses and any small business has to give kickbacks to government agents who are like the mafia. It's called "corruption" and Myanmar is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Just be glad the staff in hotels and guesthouses have jobs. People who come from countries where there isn't the problem of corruption are so Naive.
When you ask about services in Myanmar where the government doesn't get it's cut, the whole country of Myanmar should rise up with laughter at such Naive and ignorant people.

Interesting how 2 people (me Muzzman and HelenIAM) can visit the same place and have totally opposite opinions. She got the feeling they were nothing but a money machine and felt the total opposite.
I do agree that Motherland Inn 2 is a bit away from the action of Yangoon. We stayed at Motherland Inn 2 at the beginning of our trip and when we returned to Yangoon we stayed in downtown. We enjoyed both.

Thanks for all the info ...
mosegrisen - we don't mind spending $30 for our first couple of nights on arrival in Yangoon. After that it's back to normal accommodation for us!
If we can arrange a pick up from the airport to take us straight to the hotel, that always makes it easier when we've just flown in to hot + steamy Asia from cold wet UK.

IF, you wanted to stay at Motherland Inn II, they will give you a free ride from the airport to there hotel. They will also give you a ride back to the airport as long as you are going around the time a plane is arriving. We got a free ride to the hotel. Since we left real early they arranged for a taxi for us to go back to the hotel. We shared with someone else and thus paid about $3.
