Hello,
I'm going to Burma in march.
I plan to go down to the south and visit the Myeik / Mergui archipelago.
What is the best way to go there from Yangoon (bus/train/plane) ?
Is it possible to snorkel there ? Is there any accomodation or is it possible to stay with the local people ?
All informations are welcome.
Thank you for your answers.
Hi Jo. You can get a bus or a train from Yangon to Myeik but it takes a long time- 24 hours+. I'm going there myself in March and I'm intending to fly from Yangon. There are regular daily flights with different airlines from around $ 125US. You are not allowed to stay on any of the Islands, only in accommodation on the mainland and definitely not allowed to stay with locals- only in hotels or guesthouses with foreigner approved licences. Yes of course you can snorkel there, that is one of the attractions of going there. The Travelfish website had a really useful e book available for download covering Southern Myanmar - Myeik, Dawei, Ye And Kawthaung, but it doesn't seem to be available any more. I can forward you a copy of it if you want to, but obviously I'll need your email address to do that. If you want it then send me a PM, but don't post your email address on here.

You can take the train as far as dawei, the line ends there...then from there bus or minibus to myeik...the train is slow and very bumpy, but dirt cheap...I found it a great opportunity to meet and interact with the locals, i totally recommend it if you have the time...
