I also applied for a visa at the Myanmar embassy in Canberra (Australia). It took 5 business days and no requirement for employer checks. This was just last week.

IN SHORT - Canberra Embassy - 3 Business days - Posted to/from Melbourne
Also applied for a visa at the Canberra (Australia) embassy. Sent on Wednesday from Melbourne, visa processed Friday, returned the following Monday. So that's 3 business days! Very quick!
Also did not require employment checks as I put my occupation as 'university student'.
For my "address in Myanmar" I just put a few basic locations - Inle Lake, Bagan, Mandalay and Yangon.
As an independent traveler the embassy told me to attach a self-made itinerary. I pretty much made this up, a few days here and there, and of course included my entry/exit dates and departure from Australia.
Finally, I put down on my itinerary as entering through the Chinese border at Ruili. This is still not officially recognized on the Canberra embassy website, but it was all good.
I get the feeling they have very few applications at this time!

I applied at the consulate in Hong Kong this morning at 9:15am and had my passport with visa back by 10:15am!

Bangkok was 3 days turn around without any problems, applying in person cost 810 Thai Bhats.

USA - Put visa applications in US ExpressMail on 17Sep07 to embassy in Washington D.C. Received visas back on 29Sep07.

I applied at the embassy in Ottawa. They wanted a letter from my employer on letterhead stating what my job is and how long I have worked there. They then called me at work to ask what the company did. I just wanted to let everyone know that they do in fact call and check up on applications & letters.
