hi there,

we will go to myanmar next week and stay three (maybe four weeks if we include the Ngwe Saung beach). We will fly into Mandalay, do a few daytrips there, then go to Bagan. From there maybe fly to Yangon because we heard the road is quite strenuous. We'd like to take it rather slow.

Has anyone been there recently and can let us know how much a driver would charge for day trips around Mandalay and Yangon?

Considering we would like to stay in double rooms with private bathroom, clean and safe but not nothing fancy and eat on the street, plus maybe take one domestic flight Bagan-Yangon, would you think 1400 US is sufficient funds for the two of us for three weeks (flights in and out of Myanmar excluded)?

Is the Ngwe Saung beach fairly easy to be reached from Yangon? Do we need to expect a very bumpy ride? Any idea how much of a danger malaria is right now in that area?

And finally, does anyone know if you can get a visa for India in Mandalay, if so how long does it take?

Thanks for your help,
mayo

Any up-to-date recommendations for safe, clean, quiet, privately owned guesthouses for places mentioned above are also extremely appreciated

Don't know about the price of car with driver for a day. US$30-US$40 used to be enough but gas prices have gone up.

$1400 should be ample (assuming you don't fly around a lot). Easy to find double room with pvt. bath almost anywhere for under US$10. Expect dingier rooms in smaller cities but all are generally tolerable and almost always have hot water.

Ngwe Saung is easy. Five hours by bus and not particularly bumpy or anything.

Dunno about visa for India.

SoloHobo, if you mean visa on arrival for India, the answer is no. You have to get a visa before you arrive.

$1400 should be ample for what you want to do. In Mandalay, we used and highly recommend Mr. Swe as a driver/guide for day trips around Mandalay. He is very knowledgable, personable and speaks good English. He charges about $20-25 and will pick you up early and stay out as long as you wish. Really great. He can be contacted through the Royal City Hotel in Mandalay or via email at swe.myo.swe@gmail.com.
