I was in Yangon in May 2007 and was running out of cash. Found the Sedona Hotel will give you US dollars cash at about a 7.3% charge ($100 cost me $107.30). Hope this helps anyone in the same predicament. BTW, the Sedona is a nice big resort hotel about 15 minutes by cab from central Yangon. Can't remember the cost of the cab but he waited for me outside and took me to the Shwedagon Pagoda afterwards. Just negotiate.

This is true.. in a couple of hotels.. mainly in Yangon... But generally the fees are in the range of 27% to 30%.. So just don't budget for or count on the 7% only.....

The U.S. embassy has a system for wiring cash to Burma from a sender abroad in case of an emergency. I wouldn't be surprised if other embassies have a similar system.

#2... Actually I wrote a line to that effect a while ago.. got bounced on something terribly.. glad its you (not I) writing it this time.. just duck when the rock-throwing starts:-) Not many embassies presently in Myanmar though.. That's a problem.. Several have moved their staff to places like Bangkok.
