near the Tharabar Gate is the Thwande Resort, a nice pool and a great view of river, 3 types of rooms, and a nice classic place, from $40 to $80. I rented a bike daily and road into town for chow...

We stayed at the Thante Hotel Nyaung U/Oo, not to be confused with the Thande in Bagan. I reviewed it on TripAdvisor. (same screen name) We really enjoyed the hotel, rack rate is like $35 but we paid $24 in May. They have a pool, we didn't use it though. Really enjoyed the location in town.

That is why I say be careful which you book! We stayed in Nyuang Oo proper, not in Bagan. There is a Thande in Bagan. We had no river view, but exceptional service, 24 hour power, and really strong aircon. You can't ask for much more on a budget in Myanmar. :)

  • Thante Hotel in Nyaung Oo, not far from the market and plenty of other restos.
    - Bagan Thande Hotel in old Bagan, the one with river view.
    - Golden Express Hotel in Nyaung Oo, a bit far from centre of Nyaung Oo, at the edge of pagoda field.
    - Kaday Aung Hotel in New Bagan, cheapie on nice grounds, but many people do not like to stay in New Bagan.
    - Thazin Garden Hotel in New Bagan, bit more upmarket than the others, but excellent rooms, superb value for your money.

Hi
I stayed at the Golden Express hotel in Bagan. Nice pool, nice and clean room, great breakfast. I'd stay there again.

We stayed at the Kumudara Hotel (www.kumudara-bagan.com) 2 years ago. It was clean, and the people were friendly. It is still around 25-30 USD. You can see some ruins in every room, and they have a nice pool, also overlooking the ruins. It's a private hotel, and I would recommend it. You can book them online either with them, or another website (cheaper). You can rent their bikes and ride them around the ruins and into town.

Another advice------In Bagan there will be small children and vendors who will try to sell you things and won't let go until you buy something......if you can't find or buy anything from them, bring along some pencils/books/useful things that they can use, and pass it to them. This way, they will be happy and let you go, and that you are somewhat helping them. Good luck!
