I am researching booking flights from Mandalay to Chang Mai in July. Would like to fly direct as we have a tight schedule. Does anyone know if the flights go direct in monsoon season and if so how far in advance do they need to be booked.

There are NO direct flights from Mandalay to Chiang Mai,only twice weekly flights in season by Air Bagan from Yangon,otherwise fly Mandalay to Bangkok and then to Chiang Mai from there.

Bangkok Airways fly direct Mandalay to Chaing Mai.A friend of mine flew that route just last week. I dont know if monsoon season makes any difference or not? I guess there would be less demand for seats. Even if you flew via Bangkok i think you will find that the fare is the same as flying direct, it just would take longer-around 6 hours instead of about 2 going direct.

Thanks Chris. I had found the route but most feedback suggested it didnt operate in monsoon season. If we go back to Bangkok i think i would skip Chiang Mai and fly directly to Luang Prabang. More will be revealed i guess.

Yes,it does look as if you are right. Just looked on Bangkok airways website. At the moment there is 3 flights a day on that route, one of which is direct,the other 2 via Bangkok. But in July there is only 2 flights a day, both via Bangkok! The fare is exactly the same thou whether you go either direct or via Bangkok! Guess it depends on how much time you have to spare?
