I was expecting a debate on crossing Burma's borders, only to see a debate on what the correct name of the country is depending where you are from.
Has anyone thought about the fact Thailand was Siam.
The name is in a state of Flux at the current moment, but the Burmese people are Burmese, period.

My understanding is Myanmar was made up by Ne Win or one of his cronies and was supposedly taken from the main ethnic groups, and put together as a sign of ethnic unity.
No non-Burman will say they are Burmese. They are Shan or Chin or Mon, etc.
What the British did was make borders putting people and groups together who weren't in the past. The Shan considered the Burmese thier enemies as did the Thai.
Some people I met in Shan state spoke of going to central Burma as going to another country, literally.
