I will be in Thailand in mid-October and am considering a day trip to Tachilek from Chiang Rai. After the current unrest in Myanmar, is the border crossing open? Have there been any demonstrations or other political uprisings in this area? Are there any safety concerns that I should be aware of? I would appreciate any comments from someone who has been there recently.

In view of what is happening now you cannot predict the situation in mid-October. Both Thais or Burmese may close the border any time. Don't count on this crossing for an "visa" run

I understand that the situation 2 weeks from now may be different, but I'm wondering if there have been any problems in Tachilek during the political uprising. Have the demonstrations been only in the cities or throughout the country? I'm not going for a visa run but just to sightsee with a tour group.

Can't answer that - maybe try to post this in the Thailand branch. As far as sight seeing in Tachilek is concerned - you are not missing much by staying in Mae Sai. Really good covered market there. If you are going in a tour the operator might know, but then, this is Thailand :-)
