Suggestions ?. . . that don't include the standard you need at least X weeks/months to do it properly. I only have a short period (10 days all up) and I'm trying to squeeze chang mai/rai in as well.

Buy a ticket with Air Mandalay from Chiang Mai to Mandalay (Thursday PM flight only) , take the boat to Bagan, fly to Yangon with Air Mandalay or Yangon Air, return to Bangkok with Airasia.

mosegrisen has a good plan. If you can include Inle Lake I would do that. Having just been there Yangon and Mandalay would not add much. WBW

Did you do it or was it too much? I have about the same amount of time since I am not sure how long the visa will take in BKK. I was reading that the train to Mandalay was great but perhaps not enough time?
6 days is far too short Ha! Ha! you need at least 2 weeks
however if 6 days then make it 7 thursday was the flight to Mandalay return via Yangon to Changmai
afternoon and evening do puppet theatre as opposed to Moustachio brothers
and get early am bus direct next am to Bagan
2 days Bagan 1st day take bike towards airport turn right and when road bears left then straight on past wall see my photos and here you can get high up on one temple with great views over Bagan , on to Old and New Bagan
second day after these temples cut through the middle of the area to Ananda
next am early am bus to Inle
2 days Inle 1st day lake boat trip to include Indein and second day trek up to monastry and temple Caves, tea with the monks and walk up furtehr maybe afternoon hire a bike ann go to main rd after boat pier turn right up steps to monastry great views over lake next am early bus to Kalow and get overnight bus that evening to Yangon will give you a few hrs in Kalow it is much nicer here to wait for overnight bus than schweaung alternatively take Taxi to pindaya caves and then back to Heho for flight to Yangon
but sometimes flights were cancelled because there were very few tourists in November when I was there last
