#8 you have no "proof" that this does not have any effect, other than your own opinion. Letter-writing, emails, fax-jamming are all small steps activists take in many a campaign. I'm seeing a lot of info from various news commentators and Burmese organizations focusing on the 2008 Olympics as leverage to get China to sanction Burma. So SarahBernhardt's suggestion is not a bad one.

The "wasted time" you consider sending an email to SarahBernhardt's link is a whopping 5 minutes. Most of us waste hours and hours online every day.

But I would agree with you that just emailing the Olympic ticket sales isn't going to be enough. On that note: If you wish to do encourage people to do something else to help, like donating money to Burmese exile groups or organizing a protest (those are happening worldwide this Saturday), then please don't just rant on the Thorntree. Please post useful information to take different action. I'd only welcome your criticism then.

TO ALL:
Let's keep the posts constructive on here. That's the least we can do for the thousands of Burmese who have risked their lives and are sitting in jail right now while we type on our keyboards.

For everyone talking about not having an effect, small steps can lead to bigger ones. In the 1980's people were laughing when the city council of Berkeley, California voted to boycott the South African government and divest the city of all investments in their companies. This small effort snowballed into a huge international boycott which helped lead to the end of the apartheid government. Every little bit helps, and yes, it can grow into something that can make a huge difference.

#11, look at all of the protests that have had little effect around the world, they far outweigh the ones which have had an effect. Also, look at the personnel on the marches, how many of them have been on the previous protests? They could be protesting against the war in Iraq one day and then protesting in favour of it the next, anything to get a day off work. Lobby YOUR government instead of trying to get on TV.

Maybe you can take the animal testing protestors actions and go and blow up the Olympic stadium in Beijing. Hell, those protestors sabotage buildings so it must be ok right? I would rather see more pressing issues at home tackled first before giving my money overseas, natural disaster apart.

Perhaps it would be a good move to ask Mr. Bush to stop blowing trillions in Iraq and soon Iran?

It would be a good move, nice to Brown claiming that he's going to pull out.

And i'm not American if you assumed that i was.

For the Chinese govenment it pretty much boils down to national face. (theirs)
If a trickle of cancelled reservations becomes a torrent, then that might help get their
attention. Just Google "Boycott the Olympics" for hundreds of other suggestions.
Unfortunately, the Chinese government, if forced to make concessions in order for the Olympics
to be a success, could just revert to their present policies once the Olympics are over.
The decision to make the concessions mostly depends on how much face they think
they'll gain or loose in that process.
