What is happening when u r calling to Yangon? I am getting through to other parts of Myanmar, but not Yangon? Are you getting a fast tone, or silence?

U Tom, when calling Yangon, the phone actually rings but no-one picks it up. The last time I successfully called that number was Tuesday.

I was able to call someone in another part of Myanmar yesterday and had a 10 minute conversation with them. I won't disclose where this is in case it gets cut, but it's an overnight bus ride from Yangon.

U Tom .. I just called another number in Yangon and was able to get through. The line was crystal clear. But I'm worried about not being able to get through to my other friend who lives in South Dagon.

I have just found that it's hit or miss with the phones. If you really want to talk, call during regular sleeping hours...much easier to get through.

Mingalabaya - Can u explain what u wrote about the IP address? What exactly does that mean?

Also, is anyone else having trouble getting onto the Irrawaddy site? I have been getting a bandwidth exceeded error for a while...

Looks like they've gone the whole hog and terminated their name resolution server for bagan net. Try doing an nslookup of www.bagan.net.mm and you get "No Ip address could be found".

Tico-T - I know what an IP address is, but what does all this other stuff mean (other than the obvious that it's not up and running)?

BTW, as long as we're on this thread, if the military starts to turn on itself, does anyone here think that the entire gov't could fall? In addition to sheer horror, I am amazed that these soldiers could beat, humiliate and murder monks. I can't even come up with a western equivalent to the relationship the Myanmar people have with monks. I have gone over this in my head for the last several days, and spoken at some length with others who are familiar with the culture and religion, and it just does not make any sense at all.

Meant that there is no such internet address... They don't exist anymore.... when I "ping bagan net " I get "unknown host"

Irrawaddy dot org responds ... but must have used up their allocation of bandwidth... it's been the same for more than 6 hours now. Yesterday the had the virus, today they unavailable.. wonder if someone got to them?

utom.... about the military... remember how many soldiers were shot in the back by their commanding officers during war?... Fear makes people do things no-one ever thought possible.
Other factor is that they use different ethnic groups against each other... not a lot of brotherly love lost between some of these groups.

Mose - but MONKS? I agree that the generals pit different ethnicities and religions against one another in their grotesque game of chess, but do you think all those soldiers were Muslims and Christians?

BTW, I read that Gambari is meeting with DASSK today. Also that forces loyal to Maung Aye are guarding (or protecting) her now.
