Hi TTR,

We'd like to visit this beautiful country but only have the school holidays break so what do you recommend in 12 days: We were thinking of Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and Lake Inle. Afterwards we'll go to BKK for 3 more days to the beach.
Pls say how many days we should spend in each place and the most important to see in those places.
Thanks.
Cecil

Should spend 2 days each in Bagan & Inle Lake and 3 days in Mandalay because there are many near by cities such as Mingun, Ava. Amarapura.
Yangon: 3 days (include arrival and departure day)
Mandalay 3days (mingun, ava, amarapura,)
Maymyo: 1 days
Bagan: 2days
Inle Lake 2 days
Kalaw or Pindaya: 1 days

Depending on your interest and budget, the above is a good suggestion-

Read back on the Myanmar branch, and get a idea of the trails and tribulations of travel in Burma, its not easy, and can be time consuming, so may wish to insert flights to get the show on the road....

12 days you should limit the Yangon stay, as the main Pagoda is a great venue at sunset maybe on the last day before flight in morning.

As #1 suggest, Mandalay area has a lot of options, I really liked Sagiang, and all the Temples and Stupas. You can day trip this, and hit the famous bridge on the way, as well as Inwa is nice too. Within Mandalay, is the Palace, the Tablets, and many markets, Monasteries and cultural things to do.

Bagan is the highlight as far as Buddha tradition, a land of Temples and Stupas, along the river, is a great setting for riding a bike, enjoying relaxed atmosphere and good cuisine. 3 nights was not enough for me, but I got the key interest covered.

Inle Lake is another area that can be dragged out for many days, I did 4 there, and it was the end of my 22 days, so i enjoyed it, and paced the activity to just mornings or late afternoons...timing for the floating markets is key, the far south is best for a authentic feel, and stay in town as its got more to do and eat and see, as the lodges on the lake your kinda isolated, a honeymoon feel if you will.

You can hike between Kalaw and Inle Lake, or vice versa. I liked Kalaw area a lot, and the 2 night/3 day trek is the way to go. you fly to Heho for both Inle and Kalaw, FYI.

Get the Lonely Planet Myanmar guidebook, it never let me down and was accurate and bang on most the time.

Take a gander at my website and pics of the places I stayed, highlights of the country, and the wonderful and warm people I encountered hourly. Myanmar is the best country I have been to, for many reasons, but one thing for sure, everyday in Myanmar, is a surprise...:)
