Me and my friends are planning to go to Laos by land or water coming from chiang mai. Im just wondering cant we reach luang prabang buy bus? or just by slowboat? what is the daily schedule for the trip? how many hours? please help us. we preffer the bus

Can anyone tell me if I can get a Cambodia visa at the border if crossing the Mekong from 4000 islands/Si Phan Dong? Am hoping I don't have to detour via Vientiane to get it sorted out on my south. Thanks

We are thinking about taking the slow boat from Luang Prabang to the Thai Border in the next few days. Does anyone have any suggestions or reccomendations, "yes, do it's" or "stay away!'s"??? Any suggestions on a guest house in the half way town? Did the boat arrive at the border on time and before the border closed? Any info on this topic would be so much appreciated! Thanks!

Does anyone know whether there are direct flights from Singapore to Luang Prabang or do we have to go via Bangkok? I had a look through various budget airlines but unfortunately none of them seem to fly directly to LP.

I'm curious about the tobacco habits of the Katu tribe (kids smoking pipes) I saw in Ban Kon Don village on the Bolivan Plateau, and trying to find out more.

Our guide just said it was the tradition of the tribe but didn't know any more, but he wouldn't ask the people in the village why they smoked, what it meant to them, do they get sick, and so on. As far as I could make out they grew their own tobacco.

Does anyone know more about it? Was your guide more forthcoming?

Hi, I've been interestedly reading these pages over the last couple of weeks, thanks for all the info so far!
My gf & I will be traveling to Laos from +/- July 24 - Aug 18. We're now making out which route to take, probably North -> South crossing the border in Huay Xai, but I'll be asking questions on all this later on. Most important things first ;)

I'm thinking of doing the Hue - Savannaket bus trip in a few day's time, so I'm wondering how the conditions are at the moment. I've heard that it can be a bit rough on the Lao side. So if you've done either direction recently I'd love to know.

Also, to anyone in S Laos now, how are things there at the moment? How's the weather? Hot? Wet? Unpleasantly so? Or is it well worth being there at this time of year?

Do you know at what time the slow boat from the Laos/Thai border direction Luang Prabang departs? Only in the early morning? I’ll be there at around 10 am…any chance to get one?

I'm going on a trip in juli and august from Bangkok via Cambodia (only a short stay in Siem Reap and Phnom Penn since I visited in Cambodia some time ago), Vietnam and Northern Laos back to Bangkok. Not sure yet wich direction to take.
Could anybody advice me on wich direction to take? First to Siem Reap or Vientianne? And why.
