Does transportation run on normal schedules on Christmas and New Year's Eve/Day? I assume Christmas is a non-issue as this is a Buddhist area, but what about New Year's? I'm concerned mainly about boats/buses/trains in Laos and Northern Thailand.

FYI to get into Laos from Cambodia via Stung Treng (Cambodia) to Don Det/Kong (Laos): have your visa for Laos done previously in Phnom Penh (or elsewhere), otherwise you ll have to wait for your visa to be done via MR. T (at the riverside Guesthouse in Stung Treng) for 55 dollars express 2 days or 45 dollars more days... You dont have to stay at his guesthouse, there are plenty around town charging more or less the same prices...

Hi, I have read in some blogs that the slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang doesn't run on Sundays. Can anyone tell me for sure if this is right?

Thanks

We would really appreciate some accommodation suggestions for Luang Prabang and Vientianne. We are a couple with a 10 year old who really enjoy staying in guesthouse style accommodation where we can meet people in a nice relaxed atmosphere.
Also would 3 days in each place be a good length of time.
Thanks in advance.

We will be traveling from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang in December and we are a bit short of time...we will be arriving at Huay Xai at around 10:30 in the morning and it might be that all slow boats have already left...we don't want to wait for the slow boat the next morning so it might be worth to get to Luang Prabang by speed boat. A few years ago I went on a trip by speed boat in Thailand and it was great fun...

Is it really that dangerous?

We are visiting Laos in February next year, and are keen to do a multi day trek. Am considering doing a trek in Phu Hin Bun NPA from Tha Khaek, and just wondering if anyone has done a trek from there. If so, how was it, and did you organise it from there or from Vientiane? Otherwise we are thinking of trekking in Nam Ha NPA or Muang Ngoi. Any thoughts to help us make our decision would be appreciated.

Hey folks,

We'll be spending about 2.5 weeks in Northern Laos in December, and Muang Sing will be our last stop before heading on to Thailand. We're thinking we'll cross the border at Huay Xai and head to Chang Rai.

So, what's the best way to get from Muang Sing to Huay Xai? Do we need to first take the bus back to Luang Nam Tha, and then another bus to Huay Xai? How long are those respective journeys, and is it possible to make it all the way in one day?

Is there a boat option?

If anyone can…
