Laos

My wife and I will be in Vientiane in February 2014 and plan to travel to Bangkok by train.
Is it better to catch the train directly from Vientiane to Bkk or is it easier and in any way better to cross Vientiane to Nong Khai, Thailand for an overnight there then catch the train?

I am probably going to laos in November.
I basically would like to know how much money I'll have to pay to stay in cheapest single rooms.
Is any town cheaper than others?

I understand there are some weaving village upriver from Muang Ngoi. Any information, names of villages, quality and types of weavings would be appreciated.

I gather laos is high risk for malaria and Ive found that larium suits me fine.
Its pricey to buy in Thailand and only available on prescription.Does anyone know if its available in Laos and how much it costs? many thanks

I plan to be in Luang Namtha and surrounding towns in late January and early February. It seems this is a busy time to travel. It seems that many places in Luang Namtha, Muang Sing, and similar town have places but I have not found any online booking. Any help? Suggestions welcome. Thanks

I'm thinking about taking this trip soon and was wondering if there is anyone out there who has done it recently?

It is difficult to find reliable information and I have read many different stories about varying degrees of bus quality, time and even days that the buses run.

I would like to know if there are only 'local' buses doing this route or if there is a 'VIP' bus?
What days do they go?
Cost?
How long it takes?
Name of bus company?

Any info from recent experiences would be appreciated!

My partner and I have 6 weeks to travel in January and February and we are having a hard time deciding where to venture to. I have been to a few places in Europe, many places in the states, and Costa Rica. Last year we travelled to Thailand and Bali and absolutely loved it!!! It was a trip we talk about every single day still! We have wanted to venture back to south east asia to possibly Laos Cambodia and Vietnam....but wondering if we should venture to another…

My partner and I are doing the scooter loop from Pakse to the Bolaven Plateau next month. I'm fairly experienced on a scooter, but my partner isn't. I was wondering if there was anywhere we could hire scooters that is next to a quiet street or open space where he can get used to the bike before we leave?

We were thinking of starting out very early in the morning to avoid traffic, but don't think we can do this now because of lack of time, so will probably be leaving midday ish.

I will be going to Laos for the first arriving in Vientiane and having 10 nights to arrive in Siem Reap. I dont mind getting a flight if needed but would like some advice on itinerery. I dont know much about Laos but wouldnt mind seeing some chilled backpacker type places. I am thinking going north might waste time if i have to backtrack. Another concern would be travelling overland into Cambodia, would i be able t get a visa on entry and also does the bus have to go through Kratie and Phnom…
