Hi,

I am currently in Siem Riep in Cambodia and thinking about going to Laos afterwards by land. Guesthouses here offer to do the visa (I asked a couple of them) and it takes 3 days for about 50 dollars for my nationality. Does anybody know how long does it take to do the visa in Phnomh Penh (and how much does it cost for a European)? I wouldn't like to stay too much in PP as I don't have too much time, so I'm thinking about either going by land to Laos from Siem Reap or flying directly to Pakse (and get the visa on arrival at the airport). Any suggestions?

If you don't have much time then fly direct to VIENTIANNE, it will take you 3 days travel overland to Pakse

Applied for a visa today at the address above. The price has increased to $40 for US citizens, pick up in 48 hours-sucks badly as I am stuck in PP waiting for Visa.

Better to get at border and cheaper(I cannot, coming from Cambodia to Laos). Offered 12 hour for $50--if this keeps up we are talking real money-I suspect travel agencies are "working"with embassy officials to ask inordinate amount for Visa so travel will get business--fellow traveler told me you can get visa in 12 hours thru agency for $42-whose hand is being greased???????????????

Something nefarious is going on!

Hi, we are in Pakse at the moment. We flew from Siem Reap for all the reasons you mention. If you work out what it will cost you to get from Siem Reap to PP to Pakse, I think it would be about the same as flying. It cost us USD 85. there is a USD 25 departure tax from Siem Reap not included in ticket and the visa costs are between 42 and 30 USD. Flying was quick and easy - 50 minute flight compared to 2-3 days travel. very small plane ...but only 6 of us on it.

Siem Reap- Pakse 2 days max. Get the visa from a travel agency in SR, 50USD sounds right. Same as what's paid if you find yourself stuck in Stung Treng without a Lao visa. Next day service possible, higher price.

I think I will follow the suggestion of #4 and fly from Siem Riep, at least from Pakse I can visit the south of Laos.

I second the idea for flying. We did the overland from Laos to Cambodia today, and I regret it... Should have splurged for the plane ticket ($50 on Bangkok airways).

From Pakse, you can easily visit Champasak and Don Deng. Skip Siphandon.
