Hey All...
I am considering my trekking options and was wondering if anyone had experience with either Vieng Phoukha Eco-Guide Service's Akha Trail trip in the Vieng Phoukha area or with the Green Discovery Akha Experience based out of Muang Sing? Which area would be considered more "off the beaten track"? Thanks and Happy Travels.

I just did a trekking in Vieng Poukha and it is the best i have ever done (4 days ago).
If you want off the beaten track go there. Ask for Boun, hes a great guide ans speaks english very well.
Offcource we were lucky to start our 2 day trek so that the 2nd day was on the vieng puokha boat race festival. (on the full moon)
We really were the only farang there, it was amazing!! We even had the gouvernour of Luang Nam Tha district joining us for diner and were offered drinks and food from everywhere.
But even besides the festival the trekking was the best there is with great forests and a nice village night over, very rewarding but also hard when its hot.
I went to Luang Nam Tha and visited Muang Sing afterwards but it was very underwhealming and touristy in comparison.
Just my 2 cents,
ill post pictures and movies once i am back home end november.

My vote goes for Vienhphoukka as well.
Muang Sing a lot of the hinking is done under the sun, trees are gone in quite some area there...

Someone said just recently that it's not the area that you go to, it's where you go within that area and who takes you. Take Luang Prabang: it seems like about 95% of tour operators are taking people to exactly the same few villages. It's just the matter of finding the other five percent. In Muang Sing, it sounds like most guides want an easy life, and just take people where it isn't too much trouble. On the other hand, Green Discovery has an excellent reputation and does take people to interesting places, with good guides and good local participation policies.
Maybe #1 and #2 are right, #1 sounds like they had a good guide and good experiences: and maybe there are less tourists around. Still, it's just best not to judge an entire district by the fact that there are quite a few tourist operations there.

I've never walked out of either town but I'd say Vienhphouka. Boun has a good reputation and Muang Sing has had a lot of de forestation for rubber trees and relocation. But yes as JB says a good guide and open eyes could give you a trerrific trek a half hour out of Luang Prabang, or Vientiane for that matter. Have fun.
