We'll be travelling through Asia in July and August. Our planned trip include spending days in Thailand, Laos, Cambodgia and back to Thailand. I've been collecting quite some information about Thailand and Cambodgia; I'd welcome some feedback about places to visit and things to do there. We're a family of 5 with young children and experienced travellers.

It is an itinerary for Thailand from LP

Day 1 Bangkok

Loud, bright, chaotic and delightful, Bangkok is a city of modern excesses intermingled with simple traditions, all wrapped up in the famous smiles of the locals.

Day 2 Sukhothai
With some of the most impressive ruins in Thailand, Sukhothai is a friendly town with a wealth of fabulous sights to see.

Day 3 Lampang
Lampang is a northern Thai city with interesting temples and great bars - and where the horse and cart is still used for transport, mainly for tourists though.

Day 4 Homestay

Our fascinating homestay is hosted by some long-time Intrepid friends in a small Thai village. Enjoy a delicious Khantohk dinner while being entertained by traditional Thai music and dance.

Days 5-7 Chiang Mai

Awash with stunning temples, fabulous markets and a lively city center, charming Chiang Mai is rich in culture and the gateway to the northern hill tribes.

Day 8 Bangkok

Bangkok is more than just colorful city streets, khlongs (canals) weave their way through suburbs, forest parks green up the city and Buddhist temples help bring serenity.

Can you be more specific???

Otherwise someone may as well just copy/paste from some random travel website that you could find by yourself. Oh look, someone already did that^^ ;-)

Which places interest you so far? Activities? Mode of travel? Daily budget? etc.

When it comes to planning a trip and getting ideas of places to go and things to do, a Lonely Planet guide book is a good place to start :o)

I used http://www.travelfish.org/ a lot when I planned my and my family´s trip in SE Asia a few years ago.

Our kids were then 5 and 8. We arrived in Vientiane and spend a few days there, not that much to see or do though, before travelling to Vang Vieng. Yes Vang Vieng is a party place, but still very beautiful scenery around it and the kids enjoyed the cycling trips and exploring the countryside and dipping their feet in the river. We stayed a few days before heading to Luang Prabang which we all absolutely loved. Temples, caves, waterfalls, rivers, little villages, plenty of restaurants and just a niceness in the air :-)

Laos was a highlight in our 12 weeks in SE Asia

I second Pia2am's reply (#4). The drive from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng is wonderful, by the way. Or at least it was in 2007. Plan to stop a while marvelling at Phou Phra.

The only "problem" with the Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng itinerary that I can see is that getting to Vang Vieng takes a day, more or less, and you'll have to go back to Luang Prabang or down to Vientiane to fly home.

I guess for kids Vientiane can be boring, but the numerous wats in the old neighborhoods along the Mekong are being restored at a breakneck pace. They're stunning, I think.

Thank you all for your feedback! Laos sounds exciting indeed. I am more concerned about hour-long bus drives with the kids. If we can do it with few stops along the way, that's better. I have all LP guide books but they make me want to see all! Not easy to make a choice...
