I have the following questions (I'd appreciate answers to one or more of them):

1. What kind of boats (slow passenger ferries, fast boats, etc) can one take from Jinghong in China to Chiang Saen in Thailand?

2. Are trips on streams other than the Mekong, e.g., the Nam Tha, as beautiful and enjoyable as going by slow boat from Huay Xai or Pak Beng to Luang Prabang? What would be one or more of the best? What kind of boats are available?

3. Can one take a slow boat from Pak Beng to Luang Prabang?

Thanks,

Will Jourdin

  1. I have some recently updated info on the boat options at the bottom of this page.

    2. You can go down the Namtha river to the Mekong or down the Nam Ou river from Nong Khiew to Luang Prabang.

    3. Yes - about 95,000 Kip (350 baht) if you buy directly. Speed boat faster but a bit more pricey.
