Hello fellow travellers,
I will be going to Thakhek, Laos to climb and was looking for recent info on the best place to stay in Thakhek (I do not want to stay at Green Climbers). I am on a guesthouse budget.

I am coming from the Nakhom phanom airport and was also wondering what the bus options were from the airport to Thakhek.

Any other foodie recommendations are also welcome! Thanks in advance!

can't really give you a huge amount of info, arrived there by bicycle last feb.

headed directly for the center of town. may have been some cheaper places
on the outskirts, can't say for sure. i stopped at the first place i saw, sort of a
greenish building/complex on the right just before you get into the "olde towne"
area. nothing special: small room, fan, no hot water, no tv for 50,000 lak. went into
the central area, found a number of hotels/guesthouses, but all are trying to go
the "boutique" route and charging 2-3 times as much. went with the cheap place.

food? awesome find......across from the cheap guesthouse, i found a nice lady selling
donuts. awesome cowboy-sized donuts with chocolate or custard or fruit filling.

anyways, 5-minute walk from there into the center of the downtown, at first main
intersection (you'll now be 100 meters or so from the river) turn right, there's
a cafe with eco- trekking info. there was a signed tourist info office, but is actually just
an admin office, no info available there.

There is no decent food in Thakek. There are a couple of sindadplaces that are not too bad. Accommodation? I stayed in a decent hotel.

I stayed at Inthira hotel, which may beyond your budget but its a great place to stay. Even if you don't stay there, they do have a good restaurant that you should visit.

We stayed at the Southida guesthouse last time - a huge room with ensuite and AC for $10. It is very close to the old town square. See here:

There are lots of good places to eat - the riverside stalls serve the usual favourites - tamakhoung, grilled chicken, sticky rice, stir fries etc, as well as western snacks for the backpacker market.
There is a Vietnamese-dominated food court next to the main market which is very popular with about 10 stalls around shared seating.
The usual beer restaurants are all over the place offering thai/lao food and snacks cheaply.
