Can anyone suggest a good online site to find free roadmap for route Luang Prabang to Vientiene?

There's a link to Hobo Maps in the reply from Telmi to this post.

Hobomaps is a great free resource but they focus on towns and don't do the LP-Vientiane route.

Your best bet would be to pick up the GT Riders map when you get to LP.Not free but cheap. It is plastic coated so can withstand some rain.

Or you can order online:

Indeed they do cover roads as well - the link I referred to shows Highway 13 from Vang Vieng to Vientianne, and this is for the road from LP to VV.

I can't imagine how it would be possible to lose one's way. It would take an effort to turn off. Use google maps on the computer you are reading this on, send to printer.

Thanks Kaz - I use Hobomaps a lot, but had never noticed these main road maps in the top LHS of the Home page.

Theres some great old scanned detail wartime maps here too. Not much use for road travel in current times but interesting nontheless.

Those look interesting, Nabanga, thanks.
I'd never seen hobomaps until a couple of weeks ago, but I have been spending an inordinate amount of time poring over them since....

Somsai, OP needs a good map because she's cycling the route.

Plenty of possibilities.
As Somchai says google maps will do, you can't get lost really, just stay on the main road.

The hobo map gives you the advantage of telling you up and down hill sections and guesthouses/accommodation but then those are easy to find anyway - along the main road in the larger settlements. There aren't that many.

Even better is a smart phone with GPS and google maps preloaded to SD cards, down to the detail level you like and need.

Or download a GPS track someplace with the profile to check up and downhills.

Planning the days is more important then having the map with you on this one.

Happy cycling.

I'm cycling that route in about three weeks time but from Vientiane to Luang Probang, if you want the GPS data then let me know. I got the route details from a cycling journal that used the Lonely Planet Cycling Guidebook which was printed years ago. I couldn't understand the short riding distances on some days but when I plotted out the route and saw the profile, then I understood, you might only ride 50k and climb 3000 meters or more etc, so it's good to know what you're up against before you start.

I use a mostly use a Garmin but do have an IPhone with the software below installed, if you're after maps then a hardcopy or the IPhone is the way to go but Garmins are good for following tracks and the battery lasts for a longer time.
