Greetings all - I've done a lot of research but I haven't yet figured out where best to go for a 3 day trek in northern Laos. We're looking for something reasonably challenging (i.e. we don't want a trek where we'll arrive before lunch) with plenty of walking. We'd also like to stay in local villages en route if possible (at least one of the nights). I think the north is more interesting, but time constraints meant we won't be able to get beyond Luang Namtha. Another option is to do something in the Luang Prabang area, but my sense is that the Luang Namtha/Vieng Phoukha area will be more interesting. I'm really looking for recommendations for people who have done something already and can name a guide or company who did a good job.
Many thanks!

The two main companies which organise the treks are really good at giving value for money (Green Discovery and Tiger Trails). Their websites are detailed enough to get an idea of what they offer with regards to intensity and culture and pump funds back into the community.
We did a 20 km trek with village visit and canoe near Nong Khiaw, but for one day only - excellent experience.

The Luang Namtha area is a good place to trek from if you have limited time. The Viengphoukha NPA is a nice area and only 50km down the road. There are over half a dozen trekking agents along the main road, all close together. You should be careful when booking about avoiding being sold a demanding trek that ends up being a 5k stroll though, as you mention, as there are always reports of some of tem doing this. Maybe speak to the people in the Bamboo Lounge across the road from the main cluster of trekking shops, they should have the latest on which agencies to avoid.

Thanks - Vieng Phoukha looks like it could be great.

My friend and I will be in Laos in June and wish to do similar to what you are asking about. Have you made any plans for your trek about where you are going and with which company? When are you planning on going? Would love to hear about your experience.
