Any experience with good guesthouses-- someplace with charm and some character-- in Luang Prabang? Can you also give price ranges?
Thank you!

You can spend up to #250 night there...

Just look at HotelBooking website for Laos to see many.

Most regular guesthouses are $15 about

Luxury-

Sala Prabang $60

Villa Santi etc etc

Senesouk is pretty decent for about $30 I think. Small, charming rooms. Across the street from a wat, but then, most things in LP are across the street from a wat, even the wats are across the street from wats.

I found The Apsara to be a much better choice in the $40-60 price range than Sala Prabang, but you would likely be happy with Sala Prabang too.

Villa Santi is a bit run down these days. 3 Nagas is a better choice in the $100+ range.

Others can likely give good recommendations for rooms under $20.

I would avoid the Rattana guesthouse. It is recommended in your LP guidebook. When I checked out, they added a surcharge on my bill. They said the Kip lost value against the dollar during my 2 day stay and they are charging me for the lost value. They didn't warn me about it before I checked in. I argued till I was blue but they wouldn't budge. There are plenty of nice guesthouses in Luang Prabang, why settle for this one? Things like this will certainly ruin your day.

On 14th and 15th of september 2007 i sleeped in Viradesa GH 2nd lane ( Ban Wan That) on the Mekong riverside, clean. My room was with fun and shared bathroom for 30.000 kip ( 3,5 $ more or less), but i think that with 5 - 7 $ you can get romm with conditioning air and private bathroom. On the same street there are also several GH. No need reservation, it's low season.

Definitely depends on your price range. Nagas is very good with farang price. Senesouk is great location, but I heard one bad report of stolen money bag. Satri House is another good choice if you are into luxury.

There are lots to choose.

When I was there, I only stayed at one but I looked at a bunch of others on the second day. As the Timster mentioned, most are about $15. There is a huge selection and the quality and amenities were remarkably similar. Be sure to take in the night market; it's pretty fun and you'll see some interesting stuff you won't see elsewhere.
